19/09/2023: Here’s the latest weekly update from Kildysart GAA Club.
Results:
The U17 boys needed a win last Wednesday to qualify for the Division 2 shield semi-final and they went out in front of a home crowd and did just that, beating Doonbeg 3-12 to 3-7. With 3 wins and 3 losses, they finished 4th in their group. Tap here for the match report.
The U14 ladies continued their winning streak when they overcame Kilmihil 3-2 to 0-7 in the semi-final on Sunday morning. They now face Fergus Rovers on this Sunday (24th Sept) at a venue and time TBC.
The Junior Men also faced a must-win situation on Sunday in their ultimate fixture of the group stages. The win over Kilrush 2-13 to 2-11 secured them a quarter-final spot v Corofin in two weeks time. The match was to start in Labasheeda at noon and no ref had appeared as the clock struck 12, due to a county board mix-up. With no time to spare because of the senior quarter-final later that afternoon, both sides agreed to let John Fennell ref the first half until Martin Downes could get there. Kildysart controlled the first quarter and were ahead 6 points to 2 with a brace of scores from Damien Murtagh and Kieran Eyres and 1 each from Diarmuid Ginnane & JJ McQuaid. Kilrush came into a purple patch and scored an unanswered 1-4 with their goal being the difference at the break, Kildysart 0-6, Kilrush 1-6.
Again, Kildysart got the better start, with Kieran Eyres on target for his third point and substitute Ger Kelly bagging 1-2 without reply to have Kildysart ahead 1-9 to 1-6 by the 40th minute. Likewise, the next 10 minutes saw Kilrush tacked on another unanswered 1-4 to lead by 4, with 10 minutes remaining, Kildysart 1-9, Kilrush 2-10. However, Ger Bobby literally struck again – this time to the bottom right-hand corner to put the minimum between the sides, Kildysart 2-9, Kilrush 2-10. Murtagh tapped over a free to level the affairs before Kilrush went ahead once more. Christy Clancy wasted little time after being sprung from the bench to level it with 5 minutes remaining on the clock. A score from way out the field off the boot of Niall Ginnane gave Kildysart the lead and the insurance point came via another converted Murtagh free. Final score: Kildysart 2-13, Kilrush 2-11. The quarter-final is on Saturday 30th September in Clarecastle at 3pm.
Kildysart: Aidan O’Loughlin-captain, Paul O’Brien, Brendan Frawley, Mikey Finn, Diarmuid Ginnane (0-1), Joe Kelly, Mark Moloney, Shane McNelis, JJ McQuaid (0-1), Niall Ginanne (0-1), Colm Finucane, Kieran Eyres (0-3, 1 45’), Damien Murtagh (0-4, 2f), Liam Finn, Cillian McQuaid. Subs: Ger Kelly (2-2) for L. Finn (HT), Christy Clancy (0-1) for Cillian McQuaid (48 min).
The Seniors were beaten in the quarter-final on Sunday afternoon by 1-8 to 0-8 by Miltown. They left nothing on the pitch and we are proud of the team and a great accomplishment to get to their first quarter-final in over 30 years. They have raised the bar for next year’s championship. See the Championship Blog for match reports and more.
