27/05/2024: Kildysart got their Round 6 Cusack Cup match at home off to a bright start on a wet and windy Saturday evening when Rory McMahon pointed in the opening minute. The Parish countered with a brace of points but Keith “The Bomber” Murphy blasted two goals in quick succession to give Kildysart a 5 point cushion by the 10th minute. Barefield, however, entered a purple patch and dominated for the remainder of the half. Mikey Donnellan’s point in the 20th minute stopped a run of 3 unanswered scores, to have Kildysart up by three, Kildysart 2-2, DB 0-5. Barefield slotted over the next two points and struck the net in the 25th minute to go in front by two. Conor Hasset tapped over a free just before the break to leave the smallest of margins between the sides, Kildysart 2-3, Doora Barefield 1-7.
The second half was a cagey affair with only 5 scores between the sides. Doora Barefield extended their lead to three before another point from McMahon midway through the half, reeled them back in. But that two point deficit would remain as Hassett’s point in the 55th minute was countered by the visitors to leave the final score Kildysart 2-5, Doora Barefield 1-10.
Kildysart is perched precariously just above the drop zone on 4 points. Their cause was certainly aided by the losses suffered by Breckans and Clondegad on Saturday evening; both of whom remain on 2 points.
With so much at stake, all the matches of the final round have been moved to Bank Holiday Monday at 1pm. Kildysart host the table toppers Ennistymon in a decisive match - a win or a draw for Kildysart will secure our division 1 status for 2025. Anything less and our fate will depend on the results of Breckans (home to KIB) and Clondegad (home to Lissycasey).
